Sound good? Well, there’s no need to imagine anymore. Such a drink exists. It’s called green tea, and study after study has confirmed its extraordinary benefits.
An Ancient Remedy for Modern Ailments
Green tea has been prized for its flavor and healing properties for at least 4,000 years. Originally from China, it’s renowned throughout the East, including nations like Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, Korea and Thailand. Books describing its healing effects were written as long ago as the year 1191 by Buddhist priests, who described its ability to stimulate the nervous system, counter the effects of alcohol, cure indigestion, and improve brain function.
These claims have been backed up by western science. Several studies of persons who regularly drink green tea reveal that they live longer, healthier lives, with much lower rates of heart disease, diabetes and cancer than those who don’t drink it. What’s more, the leaf that the tea is brewed from is chock full of antioxidants and other compounds that have been proven to fight disease and improve well being. This isn’t rumor or hype, it’s established scientific fact.
How is green tea prepared?
The traditional method is by steeping a teaspoonful of the leaves into a five ounce container of water that’s between 180-190 degrees Fahrenheit (81-81 degrees Celsius) in temperature. The longer the bag is steeped the stronger the flavor will be. A good way to figure out what tastes best to you is to keep it in the water for 30 seconds then taste it. If it seems too weak, then do so again, sampling it about every half minute, until the flavor is how you like it. You can also use a tea infuser instead of a bag, or simply dump the leaves into the water and stir.
What about supplements?
In today’s hectic world, many people simply don’t have the time to prepare tea in the traditional way. Fortunately, there are many fine nutritional companies that make tablet and pill forms of green tea leaves. While this can be a convenient and effective way to enjoy the drink’s benefits, the quality of such products can vary widely. It’s important to do your research. Look for reviews of different products and retailers, and stick with those who are highly recommended by their customers.
